Travel Immunisations

Planning a trip overseas?

Travel immunizations are vaccines that are recommended or required for people who are traveling to certain countries or regions. These vaccines are designed to protect travelers from diseases that are prevalent in the areas they are visiting.

Different countries have different vaccine requirements depending on the health risks in the region. Some of the most commonly recommended travel immunizations include:

  1. Hepatitis A and B vaccines: Hepatitis A is a viral infection that can be contracted by consuming contaminated food or water, while Hepatitis B is contracted through contact with infected blood or body fluids. Both vaccines are recommended for travelers to regions with high rates of these diseases.
  2. Typhoid fever vaccine: This bacterial infection is contracted through contaminated food or water, and the vaccine is recommended for travelers visiting areas where typhoid is common.
  3. Yellow fever vaccine: Yellow fever is a viral infection that is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. The vaccine is required for entry into certain countries in Africa and South America.
  4. Meningococcal meningitis vaccine: This bacterial infection can cause inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, and is recommended for travelers to regions where it is common.
  5. Rabies vaccine: Rabies is a viral infection that is transmitted through the bite of an infected animal, and the vaccine is recommended for travelers visiting areas where rabies is prevalent.

It’s important to consult with a healthcare provider or a travel medicine specialist at least four to six weeks before your trip to determine which travel immunizations are recommended or required for your destination. Some vaccines may require multiple doses or take time to become effective, so it’s important to plan ahead to ensure adequate protection.
